Connecting rods in Fiat 1600 engine

Unread post by LADA World » Mar 5th, '19, 17:05

Email received:
I`m searching for some connecting rods for my fiat 1600ccm. It should be the same as this Lada connecting rod: ( 21213-1004045-LW).
But I need some measurements to check this.
Can you please send me the width of the small and big connecting rod eye?

Best Regards
Leo

Hi Leo, sure, here is what we could do with a Caliper ⟹Image

The with of the small and big end is the same: 27,0 mm ±0,05 mm As good as we could with this manual tool :)
Here is a Blueprint, just to show exactly what we are talking about.
Image :ftp/

And below are the general specifications and tolerances, for our light weight connecting rods (identical to the data from LADA 1700 cm³ engine repair manual).

Our light weight connecting rods are Class 1 (Size 1 in the above blueprint).

Received in E-mail:
Hello,

thank you very much for your fast answer.
The Fiat 1600 connection rods have the same measurements, except the Pin end width and the Big end width. The fiat rods are 25,4 mm.

Does the Lada rods have a press fit at the piston pin?

Best regards
Leo
Hi Leo,
Too bad they don't share the same width, you may cut them smaller (they have a collar that could be cut 27,0-25,4/2 = 0,8 mm on both sides).

The light weight connecting rods does not have press fit at the piston pin.
I guess the old Fiat engines also used press fit.
You could have the pistons altered, by cutting a slot for a clip to hold the piston pin in place (as all pistons does today) (I also have piston pins in 2 lengths - and clips !)
:P The old original connecting rods for the 1200-1600 ccm engines do have press fit at the piston pin.

There are a large range of LADA-pistons that fits on our light weight connecting rods, most of them are Ø82,0 mm ±1,0 mm (they are of a new design, also much more light weight compared to the old year 1970-1980 pistons). (They are not in our web-shop !)

For experiments like this (to make something fit in a Fiat), I can give you a discount of 20% on all parts, on the condition that you make a good documentation HERE (in the LADA World Support Community).
When the documentation is done you receive the discount. [o]

Hello,

thanks for the fast reply and the Information. :D

I think i´m going to cut them smaller, this should be possible and easy. I will presumably order them in a couple of days.

All the other measurements are the same with the fiat 124 1600 connecting rod:
c-c: 136mm
Small end: 21.982-21.986mm
Big end: 51.330-51.346mm
Fiat width: 25.4mm , Lada width 27.0mm

Today, i´m going to check my pistons. I already have high compression pistons (Ø80mm)without clips. But I will cut some slots. Still have to search for some cutting tools. The Lada Pistons won´t fit in the fiat.

If you want to, i can give you some informations about different fiats. Just ask me some questions or which models are interesting for you.

Thanks for your offer about the discount, but i think i will only cut the Lada connecting rods smaller and prepare the piston clips. :ok:

Best Regards
Leo

Hi Leo
Great, the offer (-20%) still stands, and can be used if you later choose to document the cutting (milling) of the rods and also cutting the slots in the pistons.

For the Fiat, the only (but very large) thing I wish for Christmas is to know what Fiat parts are identical to the LADA parts.
Some spare part catalogs for different Fiats are always welcome. Also workshop books with measures are welcome. :ftp/
It would help my shop to point out exactly the right parts for Fiat owners.

Hello Lada community :) ,

here´s a small PDF documentation about modifying the Lada 1700ccm connecting rod to fit in a fiat 1608 (Engine: 125BC000).
You will also find the specification sheet of the Fiat 124 1608.

https://www.directupload.net/file/d/543 ... j_pdf.html

https://www.directupload.net/file/d/543 ... r_pdf.html

I converted the documentation into a PDF, it was better with all the pictures.

If you want to, I can send you the .doc documentation via mail.

Thanks a lot Leo,

A very high level of documentation & engineering
Thank you so much, nothing seems to be impossible.

Hello,

thank you very much.
Just the torque specs for the connecting rod bolts are missing. You got some informations?

Hi Leo,

The factory is using 3 different bolt-sizes (for all their con. rods):
- 5/16" is torqued with 55 Nm
- 3/8" is torqued with 75 Nm
- 7/16" is torqued with 95 Nm

The Pro's recommends:
Torquing each bolt at least five times before the final torque is applied during assembly. This is because new bolts need to establish a wear pattern within the threads.

Please provide feedback about the bolt-size used, and I will update the web-shop.

Hi,

the bolts are 3/8".

Like you already said: 3/8" is torqued with 75 Nm

Thanks Leo

Please provide feedback about the 20% discount for the connecting rods. Hope the documentation is good. :)
