Snow = 2 Spinning wheels. I need 4 Spinning wheels

Unread post by LADA World » Apr 26th, '18, 06:11

Support Question from Per
I have a Lada Niva 2005,

When driven winter time it only spins on 2 wheels. One on the aft axel and one on the forward.
I’m taking it to service now may 9.
Is it possible to put in a differential on the forward or aft axel (or both) that brakes the spinning wheel?
I did this spinning test in low first gear with only a little throttle.

Sent with persistent love ❤️ on a Peregrination

Hi Per,

There are many ways to give you 4 spinning wheels.
The correct solution for you depends on:
What else you are using your LADA Niva for !
What is your budget !

Here is a list of possible solutions:
- Just apply your hand-brake (if starting on ice is a problem) - that's also free :)
- Install "Skid Brakes" - However, you need to learn how to control them.
- Install some low budget locking differentials - They are very noisy and requires lots of service
- Install ATB differentials - They are know to perform excellent on snow/ice.
- Install LSD differentials - They are only used with a high performance engine
- Install Air-lockers :-*

On a scale from 0 to 100%, how much do you drive on "normal roads" ?

Not so much normal roads summer time, only normal roads winter time when it’s icy and snow.

What is air lock?

ATB seems like the one to choose?

OK - great, I would say you drive very little on solid road, and mostly on slippery roads.
That information is essential

This means you can go towards a more Lock'ed differential solution.
If you wish it should work automatically - the ATB is recommended.
If you wish to be in control - the Air-locker is recommended.
If you wish it should be cheap - the "Skid brakes" is recommended.

The Air-locker is the luxurious and expensive solution.
The Air-locker is a differential that can be locked (when you wish it - no automation here), and is controlled by compressed air. You just press a button to activate/de-activate it (no mechanical lever).
The Air-locker will break axles if you drive on solid roads when the Locker is activated.

The ATB is constantly (automatic) trying to give you the best grip - and is perfect when the road suddenly goes from solid to snow to ice. It even works on high speed driving. That is also why Audi uses it in the Audi Quatro (4x4), it adds safety.
The ATB we sell is available in a few different settings called "Preload value".
A low Preload value means less stress on the axles when driving on normal roads, and less aggressive on slippery roads.
A high Preload value means more stress on the axles when driving on normal roads, and more aggressive on slippery roads.
I will give you a more detailed description if you wish to buy the ATB - Don't worry :?

Skid brake (Sorry, the correct name is Cutting brake) is here: https://ladaworld.com/en/custom-made-pa ... -2out.html
I have plenty of ATB's available - I just need to add them to my web-shop. Would you like me to add them ?
The Air-locker is not available at the moment.
